Nicosulfuron is a branched chain amino acid synthesis ( ALS or AHAS ) inhibitor. Acts by inhibiting biosynthesis of the essential amino acide valine and isoleucine, hence stopping cell division and plant growth. It is a selective post-emergence herbicide with high-efficiency and low toxicity used in corn fields to control annual gramineous weeds such as barnyardgrass, crabgrass, green bristlegrass, annual broad-leaved weeds such as common purslane, redroot amaranth, knotweed and annual sedge weeds.
